In Europe, Toyota is a car company that's best known for really small cars, like the Aygo they make with PSA and the Yaris supermini. However, both these cars recorded sales declines in 2013. So, how has the Big T able to register its third year of market and volume gains?
One of the major contributors was the new Toyota RAV4 compact SUV. The model that was launched earlier in the year proved a hit with customers and as a result, sales grew by 42% in 2013, to 95,168 units.
The return to form for this model is partly as a result of the keener look, with the bold front fascia attracting more young family buyers. We tested the new RAV4 last year as well, and found it to be an ideal family car with excellent mileage and a versatile load bay.
With a new 2-liter diesel engined base model just added to the RAV4 European range, more customers are going to follow in 2014, attracted by the excellent cost of ownership.
