A Toyota Prius taxi using an aftermarket LPG installation blew up on Wednesday morning in Barcelona, with the event causing quite a stir in the Spanish city.
There were no passengers in the cab, but the taxi driver suffered first-degree burns on his head in the incident. In addition, two occupants of a vehicle that was behind the Prius were injured.

The taxi driver’s union of Catalonia stated that the Prius has been converted to run on LPG two weeks before the explosion. Toyota’s Spanish arm was quick to issue an official statement, explaining that it doesn recommend such conversions for its cars.

“Toyota Spain disapproves the amendment of any of our vehicles (hybrid or not ) through the installation of LPG, as these facilities substantially change the operating conditions of the car and do not meet the requirements of Toyota Motor Corporation for technical approval,” Toyota's release states.

The carmaker wanted to make sure that the incident doesn’t affect its image. Thus, it explained that it is technically impossible for a stock Prius to explode in such a manner. Toyota is currently investigating the Prius taxi.
