Toyota Prius Recalled Over Parking Brake Problem. Yes, the New Prius!

From 2009 to 2011, Toyota recalled a helluva lot of Prius models for a handful of reasons. Including the SAI, Lexus HS 250h, Prius PHV, and Prius, Toyota called back 436,000 vehicles worldwide over a brake software glitch. Then came the floor mat saga. Then the fourth-gen Prius joined its predecessor's fate.
The model year 2016 and 2017 Toyota Prius, cars rated Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, are now targeted due to a problem with the parking brake. The Japanese manufacturer doesn’t go into the details as finely as we would’ve wished, but it did mention that “there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative.” If this happens and the driver exits the hybrid vehicle without moving the gear lever in “Park” while the ignition is on, the Prius could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota hasn’t tied any crash, injury or death to the said problem, but USA Today cites the Associated Press about “reports of crashes, injuries, and deaths.“ When asked about more details, a spokesman declined to come clean about what's going on. 92,000 vehicles are being recalled in the United States, 212,000 in Japan, and the rest in Europe and adjacent markets.

Whatever the investigations into the crash, injury, and death reports will turn up, Toyota dealers were instructed to “add clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent the cable from becoming inoperative at no cost to customers.” Starting in November, known owners of the fourth-generation Prius in the United States will be notified by first class mail to bring their hybrid vehicles in for repair. From the looks of it, the fix won't take too long.

In the meantime, another way of checking if your 2016 / 2017 Toyota Prius is affected is by entering the VIN in the search bar of www.toyota.com/recall.
