Last we heard of the Toyota Prius C, it spoke Japanese, was called the Aqua and made its debut in Tokyo. Now, it has finally become the new member of the North American hybrid family, as it made its debut in Detroit.
The Prius C arrives powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine burning gasoline using the Atkinson cycle, and producing 73 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor puts its own spin on things, and is juiced by a 144-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Combined output for the pair is 100 horsepower.

On the US cycle, Toyota estimates it will do 53 city, 46 highway and 50 mpg highway. The Prius C will arrive at dealerships with a starting price of $19,000 this march.
