Toyota Pondering Etios Hybrid

Introduced in 2010, initially on the Indian market and later in South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia, the Toyota Etios could be offered in a hybrid version in the near future, as part of the company’s plan to meet emerging market needs.

"We need to consider hybrid version of Etios going forward or a car for the emerging market. I think the first priority is to reduce the cost of the vehicle and improve efficiency levels, so that the customers in India are willing to choose hybrids as a better affordable alternative for the future,” said Kouji Toyoshima, Toyota’s chief engineer.

The Toyota Etios sedan comes with two engine options, a petrol 1.5-liter with 90 PS (66 kW), and a diesel 1.4-liter rated at 68 PS (50 kW), while the hatchback, sold as Liva, is powered by the same diesel unit, but can be ordered with a smaller 1.2-liter (80 PS / 59 kW) petrol engine.

The subcompact is assembled in India (Bidadi, Karnataka) and Brazil (Sorocaba, Sao Paulo).
