The Japanese language has a particular word combination for 'light vehicle', what some petrolheads might know as kei car, k-car or kei jidMsha. We're telling you this because Toyota just launched the Pixis Mega in Japan.
There's an entire culture in Japan for small cars, born after World War II as public vehicles. We can name a few classics, like the Honda Life or Mazda R360, but since 2003, the best-selling kei car was Suzuki's Wagon R.

Maybe that's about to change after Toyota's new Pixis Mega hits Japanese showrooms.

Created to "offer versatility matched with the diverse needs and lifestyles of car-buyers in Japan", the new Pixis Mega offers class-leading 1,455 mm cabin height while eye-point has been set at 1,387 mm, similar to that of a minivan, for better visibility, Toyota tells us.

Also, there's an extra passenger-side mirror (located below the side mirror) and a door height of 1,700 mm for easy access in and out of the car, coupled with the lateral one-touch electric sliding doors.

Space is what Toyota Pixis Mega struggles to do best despite its small size, thanks to a dedicated storage space beneath the trunk floor, with a capacity of approximately 90 liters (approximately 16 liters on 4WD variants).

Engine-wise, every Pixis is animated by a 0.66-liter gasoline engine that can be had either in naturally aspirated config (52 HP) or turbocharged (64 HP).

Prices start at 1,350,000 yen or around $10,900 at current exchange rates, but for that money you only get an FWD version with the n/a unit. Go up the price ladder to the other extreme and you can own a turbo Pixis with AWD for 1,749,600 yen ($14,154 at current exchange rates).
