Toyota NASCAR Uses Tablets With Special App for Racing

Back in the old days, there was no connection between the driver and the crew at the pitstop, no fancy sensors, no antennae, just the man and the machine. That was true racing.

But with the technology breakout, the imminent digitization “infested” the motorsport, adding all sort of gizmos and complicated telemetry to enhance performance and shave off lap seconds.

Such new tech comes from Toyota’s NASCAR racing team, which entered the app world with their newly developed Trackside application built for Windows 8 tablets to help telemetry and data collection.

Before the app, data was collected from the car via a laptop, having the driver to exit the car in order to look at it. Add the amount of noise on the race track and the communication between the driver and the engineers doesn’t look that efficient.

Trackside collects the car’s performance data and it shares it simultaneously with the team and it also helps communicating between the members, as it’s much better to type something and send it rather than yelling in the headset.
