Yesterday we were telling you the Toyota FCV production version will enter the market under the “Mirai” name and will reach dealerships, in California at least, in fall 2015. Now it’s time to find out some specs and, more importantly, the price tag it will wear.
The four-door midsize sedan Mirai is said to compete with a traditional internal combustion engine car, not only performance wise, but including range and refueling time.
Its fuel cell stack is the reason here as it delivers one of the world’s best power outputs at 3.1 kW/L while still maintaining its size small enough to fit under the front seats. Don’t worry, it’s under the floor in a special sealed capsule.
The system paired with the electric motor has the equivalent of 153 hp, which can accelerate the Mirai from 0 to 60 (96 km/h) in 9 seconds while delivering a passing time of 3 seconds from 25 to 40 mph (40 - 64 km/h).
It might sound a bit down on power for some, but then we ask, how many cars on the market today could also be used to power a house? Yep, the Mirai can be had with an optional power take off (PTO) device which lets you use it as a generator. In case of an emergency, the fuel cell can power an average house for up to a week.
You’ll be able to lease the Mirai at $499 per month on a 36 month period with $3,649 due at lease signing. Or you can purchase the car straight away for $57,500.
And if you meet the conditions for state and federal incentives ($13,000), the Mirai’s price can drop under $45,000. Which is less than a Toyota RAV4 EV or Highlander Hybrid. Let’s just hope the infrastructure will provide enough hydrogen refueling stations by the time you can actually drive one of these out the dealership.
