Toyota Land Cruiser Gets "Downsized" 2.8 Diesel Engine and 6-Speed Auto in Europe

The current Toyota Land Cruiser had every reason to feel a bit neglected lately, so the Japanese company decided to show it some love by offering a new engine and gearbox for its lineup. Don't expect anything too radical, though, as the Land Cruiser remains the same powerhorse we know and love.

The 2.8 D-4D engine is also an inline-four-cylinder unit, but comes with 177 PS (175 hp) available at 3,400 rpm, and up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. Compared to the 3.0 D-4D engine, the new one has 13 PS less, but 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) more. This means the new, smaller engine is more fuel-efficient.

The economy is also helped by the new automatic gearbox. The new 6-speed Super ECT transmissions can be mated with the new engine as an option to the standard six-speed manual. In both configurations, the large SUV has a top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph), but 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) comes faster with the manual stick: 12.1 seconds as opposed to 12.7 seconds.

Back to fuel economy and CO2 emissions, the new engine is 9 percent more efficient than the larger, 3.0 D-4D. On the five-door version of the Land Cruiser, it's got a mixed fuel consumption of 7.4 l/100 km (38.2 mpg UK or 31.8 mpg US) which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 194 g/km.

Predictably, the three-door version has better figures with a 7.2 l/100 km (39.2 mpg UK and 32.6 mpg US) fuel consumption and 190 CO2 g/km. In both cases, sticking with the standard manual gearbox has no influence on these numbers whatsoever.

The new powertrain options are available on both the three- and five-door body styles, unlike the 4.0-liter VVT-i V6 petrol engine which only comes with the five-door version. The power figures remain the same as before - 281 PS (278 hp) at 5,600 rpm and 385 Nm (284 hp) at 4,400 rpm - but it can now be mated with the new ECT transmission as well.
