Toyota Hybrid Sales Reach 1M Units in Japan and 2.68M Units Globally

Toyota has reached a hybrid vehicle sales milestone, announcing that its Japanese domestic market hybrid vehicle sales have topped the 1 million units mark, with the global statistics showing sales of over 2.68 million units as of July 31.

As of July 31, 2010, TMC calculates that TMC hybrid vehicles, since 1997, have led to approximately 4 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions in Japan, and approximately 15 million fewer tons globally, than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance,” stated the press release.

Toyota’s hybrid offensive debuted in August 1997 in Japan with the Coaster Hybrid EV minibus. In December 1997, Toyota introduced the first generation of the Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle.

Subsequently, the automotive producer’s hybrid system was expanded to a wide range of vehicles, such as minivans, SUVs and rear-wheel-drive sedans.

Fast-forwarding to 2009, we see the third generation of the Prius (you can read our review of the car here) being launched, together with other two hybrid vehicles, the Lexus HS250h and the Toyota Sai. Toyota’s current hybrid vehicle line-up in Japan includes nine passenger vehicles and three commercial vehicles.

On the other markets (approximately 80 countries and regions) Toyota has managed to sell over 1.68 million hybrid vehicles. The company is constantly making efforts to increase its range of hybrid models and expand the number of markets on which these are sold

Positioning response to environmental issues as a management priority, TMC has endeavored to achieve the widespread use of hybrid vehicles. TMC's stance is to further promote the use of hybrid vehicles, through such measures as aiming to sell 1 million hybrid vehicles a year as early as possible in the 2010s, and introducing hybrid models in all vehicle series in its lineup as early as possible in the 2020s,” stated the press release.
