Japan’s biggest automakers, Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Nissan, have issued a recall for 3.4 million of their vehicles over faulty airbags.
In case you’re wondering why four different manufacturers released safety callbacks at the same time, it’s because all of the them are using airbag systems supplied by Takata Corporation. According to the automakers, the inflators used in the side airbags may not work properly and could cause passenger injury.
Toyota needs to recall no less than 1.73 million cars, including Corolla, Yaris, and Camry models, while Honda will send 1.14 million of their X-Trail, Patrol, Almera and Navara vehicles to dealerships. Nissan and Mazda callbacks cover 480,000 and 45,463 cars respectively. All cars are assembled between 2000 and 2004.
According to Takata Corporation, the recall affects non-Japanese automakers as well, but further details are yet to be released.
