Toyota’s Supra is prepping for a comeback in a few years. The Japanese automaker recenty patented the name in Europe, since it already holds the trademark for the ”Supra” name in the USA in the vehicle category.
We are writing about a filing that happened last week, at the European Union’s Intellectual Property Office, where Toyota filed the papers on Friday, June 3, 2016.

As SupraMKV notes, the trademark filing from Europe comes two years from the moment when the automaker filed one in the United States of America.

Since the time of the patent filing, Toyota could take a few years to launch the production version of the fifth generation Supra on the market.

As you already know by now, Toyota and BMW have joined hands and signed a partnership a few years ago, and the two brands will build a sports car together.

In January 2014, at the Detroit Auto Show, Toyota showcased a beautiful and aggressive concept called FT-1. The concept vehicle was confirmed as the inspiration for the Mark V Toyota Supra.

Over the years, insiders from both companies disclosed information about the new model. Just like the “Toyobaru,” a coupe jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru and sold by both brands, the new Supra will also have a BMW version. The latter is expected to be called “Z5,” and will be the replacement of the Z4. Naturally, we are talking about a roadster.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s Supra is expected to be a coupe. For the moment, it is unclear whether both brands will have a convertible and coupe versions of the two sister models. However, since they are splitting development costs and will invest significant sums of money in the new cars, Toyota and BMW are expected to provide both coupe and roadster versions for each model.

Both will reportedly enter production at Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz, Austria, sometime in 2018. They are expected to be showcased in completed versions by the end of 2017, while all the key markets will have the two twins in showrooms by 2019.
