Former national drift champion Beau Yates will team with Toyota to enter this year’s Australian Drifting Grand Prix series using a heavy-modified GT 86 coupe.
Yates won the 2007 championship aided by the classic Toyota AE 86, so the lightweight GT 86 successor should be a perfect car for the job.

“The 86 is an affordable sports car that's meant to be enjoyed by driving enthusiasts everywhere,” he said. “The starting point is an exceptionally responsive and agile car with intuitive handling that gives precise feedback -- a perfect platform that allows users to customize it to their hearts’ content. Its chassis and suspension are so neutral and predictable, there's plenty of scope for a car nut like me to fully explore its dynamic potential.”

The GT 86 will loose about 250 kg of unnecessary trims and gizmos and its engine will boost about 350 kW (475 hp) due to a turbocharger and other racing parts.
