Toyota can say "maybe" and "if" all it wants to, everybody know they are going to make a convertible version of the GT 86 or Scion FR-S. The coupe has provided plenty of smiles per gallon across the world, and a drop-top is now seen as the best way to boost appeal and attract new types of customers.
The model has already been shown as a thinly veiled concept earlier this year. However, that had its roof neatly stored away. It looked cool, but left us wondering what the production model will look like once you pop the roof back up.
Thanks to some leaked patent filings found and published by Car&Driver, we now know what the Toyota convertible will look like. We're pleased to say it's basically the same creature as the coupe. The only major difference is that the small rear pieces of glass behind the doors are now a different shape so they can retract into the body. The rear glass is also kind of small, but then that's to be expected.
Overall, going topless is something we'd definitely recommend for the little sportscar from Japan.
Weight was been the biggest enemy of the GT 86 ever since they started developing it. Still, we don't see them installing one of those manual roofs that you have to move yourself.
