The long awaited Toyota sports coupe that was co-developed in partnership with Subaru made its official global debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show last year. Tuners around the world are already gearing up to find was of making the car more awesome, but Toyota wants to make it more fun instead.
We are talking about making the GT 86 into a convertible of course. The purist will of course object to this idea because it also makes the sport car less pure, heavier and more floppy. But considering how light the 86 already is, it won’t hurt much. And if you’re concerned about getting people in the back, that would have been a problem with the coupe as well.
The GT 86’s chief development engineer Tetsuya Tada confirmed to German publication AutoBild that the convertible is indeed coming.
"The GT 86 was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible," Tada told the publication.
So where does that leave the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S rear wheel drive coupes?
