Since the heat of the massive recall in the beginning of the year has began fading, Japanese manufacturer Toyota is coming back on track in terms of self confidence. Although Toyota's customers' pool hasn't really diminished as a result of the quality issues, fears that this will happen still existed.
Those fears are, however, unfounded. Since the beginning of the year, the carmaker has posted good sales numbers. So is the case for the month of May, when Toyota says it sold 162,813 vehicles, or 6.7 percent more than in the same month last year.
The Toyota Division sold 140,597 units, 3.6 percent more than the same period last year. The Lexus Division reported May sales of 22,216 units, an increase of 31.3 percent over the year-ago month. The niche vehicles wearing the Scion badge sold 4,112 units.
As for its vehicles, the best selling models were Camry and Camry Hybrid (29,295 units), Corolla (26,953 units) and Prius (14,248 units).
Even more, the good performance in May is poised to continue, as June started "with a bang."
"Memorial Day weekend kicked off the summer selling season with a bang, resulting in our best-selling weekend of the year," Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales says in a statement.
"As Toyota maintains its leadership position as the number one retail brand in the industry for the third consecutive month, we look forward to building this momentum as we work hard to exceed our customers' expectations for quality, safety, reliability and service."
