Toyota Grows in April, Despite Quality Issues

The troubled months of early 2010 apparently did not dent the customers' trust in Toyota's vehicles as much as some analysts thought they would, as the Japanese carmaker posted yet another good month when it comes to sales.

Toyota reported it sold 157,439 vehicles in April, which represents a 24.4 percent increase over the same month of 2009. That's still fewer than Ford (162,996 vehicles) and GM (183,091 vehicles).

Toyota's passenger cars division sold 83,506 units, an increase of 18.2 percent over last April. The best selling models were the Corolla (27,932 units, up 50.7 percent), Camry and Camry Hybrid (combined sales of 27,914 units, up 10.2 percent).

Toyota's light trucks sold 55,574 units in April, up 33.3 percent. The segment was spearheaded by the RAV4 (14,851 units, up 33.5 percent), Highlander and Highlander Hybrid (combined sales of 7,026 units, up 25.6 percent).

Toyota's beloved hybrid segment registered a 41.1 percent increase compared to April 2009. The Prius, Camry, HS and Highlander hybrids sold 17,242 units.

The carmaker's luxury division, Lexus, reported passenger car sales of 9,901 units, up 37.7 percent. The best selling Lexus was the ES, with 4,396 units (up 23.9 percent), followed by the IS (2,701 units, up 16.2 percent) and the HS (1,076 units).

As for the Scion, the niche vehicle posted sales of 3,577 units. The xB led the way, selling 1,643 units, followed by the tC (1,171 units) and the xD (763 units).
