Toyota Flips the Bird to Tesla's Elon Musk

Despite the fact Toyota partnered with Tesla over battery research and development, it seem that there is some kind of mute fight between the two.

At a Tesla presentation in Munich, Elon Musk somehow managed to touch the fuel cell cars subject. He thinks that hydrogen is a much too dangerous gas to use in personal transportation and should be only used in rockets. He even went that far into calling fuel cell cars “bullshit.”

Tesla is not the only skeptical automaker regarding hydrogen powered vehicles; Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn and ex Volkswagen executive Jonathan Browing have expressed their doubts.

On the other hand, for Toyota, this sounds just like the hate it got back in 1998 when it was launching the first gasoline-electric hybrid in the world.

"Personally I don't really care what Elon and Carlos and Jonathan have to say about fuel cells. It's very reminiscent of 1998, 1999 when we first introduced the Prius," said Toyota’s senior vice president Bob Carter at a press conference in Detroit. "Ten years from now, I have a hunch our fuel cell vehicle will be viewed in similar terms. We truly believe it has the same potential as the first Prius," he added.

Toyota’s FCV fuel cell car promises to solve the problem of actual standard electric vehicles - recharge time and range. By using an on-board fuel cell to create electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, the FCV will have a range of over 300 miles and its hydrogen tanks can be filled in about 3 minutes. Moreover, the car can also work as a power backup for your home in case of emergency.
