While Toyota is fixing up the FJ Cruiser headlight issue, it has begun a small war with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that is still forbidding the use of the new headlights from the Japanese automaker.
Toyota’s new high beam technology can automatically dim portions of the light that would shine in oncoming drivers’ eyes, but the NHTSA regulation last revised in 1999 is forbidding such technologies on the roads of USA for now.
As other automakers have also developed intelligent beam assist systems that saves the hassle of switching between high an low beams, Toyota took the bull by the horns and handed a petition to NHTSA.
Toyota has already installed this system on 16,600 vehicles sold throughout Europe and Japan where they work great. All that is left for the automaker is to wait until NHTSA assess the petition.
