The Toyota GT 86 is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest modern era sports cars, using the same "Simplify, then add lightness" recipe that Colin Chapman introduced with Lotus in the 1960s.
While we had to wait for the car to hit dealerships to find that out, Toyota engineers knew all along what kind of vehicle the GT 86 was going to be. Apparently, they got a little too excited about it and started pondering other versions based on the GT 86 coupe.
According to product chief Tetsuya Tada, the whole project was meant to be carried out in great secrecy, but Toyota executives found out about it and sent its engineers back to work on developing the coupe.
"Also, along the way, we investigated the possibility of a sedan and a shooting brake. Actually we tried to do this secretly but the executives found us out. They said: 'what are you doing? Will you please focus on the coupe?'," Tada said in a Toyota UK Blog interview.
“It’s just my personal dream that the GT 86 could become a family like what BMW has done with the Mini family. I hope that happens. I also have five dogs myself and I would like to have them in the car, so a sports shooting break would be just right," Tada added.
We do hope Mr. Tada manages to convince Toyota officials to consider the GT 86 as a sedan and shooting brake. Awesome and sales success could go hand in hand, you know?
