Toyota Debuts Prius Production in Thailand

Toyota is continuing to make efforts to increase the popularity of hybrid vehicles around the world. As part of this plan, the company announced that it will also produce the Prius in Thailand.

Consumer interest in the environment and new technologies has been growing in Thailand, and the introduction of the Prius here follows the start of Thai production and sales of the “Camry Hybrid” sedan in 2009. Toyota, under its founding philosophy of contributing to society through the manufacture of automobiles, will continue to strive to produce vehicles that meet consumers’ needs,” stated the press release.

Toyota has set itself a hybrid vehicle sales target of 1 million units per year. The company wants to achieve this as early as possible in the 2010s.

The Prius was introduced in Japan back in 1997. The vehicle became available on overseas markets in 2000. Toyota introduced the second generation of the vehicle three years later, while the current incarnation of the car came to the world in 2009. The Prius’ global sales surpassed the 2 million units mark as of September 2010.

As for the future of the car, Toyota confirmed that it will introduce a Prius-based MPV at the upcoming North American International Auto Show. This is expected to come with three rows of seats and will be able to accommodate seven passengers.

With its excellent environmental performance, design and advanced technologies, we hope the Prius provides even more people in Thailand with the joys of driving,” said Toyota Motor Thailand President Kyoichi Tanada.
