Toyota has revealed the Driver Awareness Research Vehicle (DAR-V) at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a vehicle that focuses on reducing the driver distractions before even putting the key in the ignition.
With all the things needed to be monitored in today’s vehicles, which bombard the driver with information from everywhere, Toyota is trying to minimize the distractions and let the driver focus on the road ahead through its jointly developed DAR-V.

“Cars have become an interaction of multiple screens.  Initially, there was the windscreen, and rear window and the rear and side-view mirrors,” said Chuck Gulash, director of Toyota’s Collaborative Safety Research Center. “We now have multiple gauge clusters, large information screens and heads-up displays all feeding us information and competing for our attention.”

Developed in partnership with Microsoft Research, the DAR-V uses technologies such as Kinect to display highly personalized information on the side of the window when the driver approaches the vehicle. Using a combination of gesture control, voice and key fob, drivers can navigate information such as updates on traffic and weather, appointments and schedules for the day ahead and even route details that might include a gas station if the car is low on fuel.
