You know it’s time to call it a day on your workout when you see a car land smack in the middle of the pool in which you’re doing laps. It happened earlier this week at LA Fitness in Seattle, Washington.
The incident occurred when the gym was open: there were several patrons working out in the gym and 3 of them doing laps in the pool. The swimmers got the scare of a lifetime when a dark-colored Toyota came crashing through the window and landed right in the middle of the pool, KOMO News reports.
According to the media outlet, the driver was a 69-year-old man. Noah Schlenke, one of the men in the pool at the time, also works as a lifeguard, so he helped the driver get out of the vehicle before it went completely under. He says the man was so shocked he didn’t even understand what had happened at first.
“The man was parked in his car in a nearby handicap space outside the building when he hit the gas pedal instead of the emergency brake, Mark Jamieson with the Seattle Police Department said,” the media outlet notes.
“So, we opened the door and we’re like, 'hey you gotta get out, you gotta get out!',” Schlenke says. “And he just kind of looked at us and he still wasn’t quite understanding where he was. So, the guy I was with actually just came in and reached over and grabbed him and pulled him out.”
Despite the shock, the driver wasn’t injured and neither was any of the men in the pool. A tow truck came, lifted the car out of the pool and towed it through the same window it had come through. A manager for LA Fitness says the pool will remain closed until an ongoing investigation will determine it’s safe for patrons to swim in it again.
