What almost everybody first thought to be another Photoshop rendering made by a Prius-fan with computer skills, the leaked pictures of the third/fourth generation of the Toyota Prius are apparently the real deal. A Toyota spokesperson has confirmed the stolen images are those of the new Prius, which is to be officially launched at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) in January 2009. This can only mean that Toyota designers are very afraid of spectacular changes, and that the Active Hybrid-X concept from last year's Geneva Motor Show wasn't a futuristic four-wheeld teaser for the new Prius.
“Many of you will have seen by now photographs on sites like PriusChat, Jalopnik and AutoblogGreen of a vehicle said to be the new Prius. We thought we’d take a moment to confirm that the car shown in these unauthorized photos – at least the ones we’ve seen so far - is indeed the new Prius,” said Jon F. Thompson, editor on the official Toyota blog.
He failed to provide any specific technical details though (or any other details for that matter) in a very diplomatic and wooden marketing language: “Sorry, we’re not able to provide details. Those will be forthcoming when the car is formally introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.“
The only sure thing to know is that the new car will have better fuel economy and slightly more interior room, which in other words means that Toyota isn't yet ready for the Chevrolet Volt with a plug-in hybrid of their own, making this next-gen Prius and evolutionary and somehow conservatory model.
“What we can tell you, however, is this: This new Prius will retain all of the virtues of the model that precedes it. It’s about the same size as its forebear, but with more interior room and better fuel economy. But you expected nothing less, right? Tune in January 11-13 for more information.” Thompson also said.
