Toyota Close to Sign Kubica for 2010

Despite being linked with a withdrawal from Formula One in recent weeks, Toyota seem to make even more plans for the upcoming season. The Japanese manufacturer is reportedly eyeing Robert Kubica for a race seat in 2010, considering that the Polish driver's deal with BMW Sauber is to expire at the end of the season.

Kubica was heavily linked with a move to Renault in recent weeks, where he is to take Fernando Alonso's spot in the team. However, when talking to the media in Japan on Thursday, Kubica revealed that there are more than 2 teams wanting his services for the upcoming season.

Robert Kubica's manager Daniele Morelli was seen during a meeting with Toyota's team president John Howett at Suzuka, on Friday. Soon after they met, Howett was quoted as saying to the media that: “We know who we would like in the car and we are working hard on it.

In addition, the Toyota official revealed that Toyota will be looking to change its lineup completely in 2010, in order to have a brand new start in the series. Under the circumstances, Italian driver Jarno Trulli will almost certainly leave the team, while Timo Glock's presence at Cologne is still being scrutinized.

We want the options as we think there could be quite a big movement in the driver market. He (Glock) did a fantastic job in Singapore (finishing second) and we are talking to him, but honestly speaking we feel that could have been the result in other races if we could qualify in that position,” said Howett, according to the GMM news agency.

I am sorry, it is a very tough life, and our job is to deliver results. We have a car that is more regularly capable of being on the podium and much closer to the top this year. We are not delivering, and there are things beyond the team and the chassis itself. We need to keep all our options open, and to be able to catch somebody if the opportunity comes, we need two seats available,” added the Toyota president.

Howett also admitted that Toyota's turn of strategy was triggered by the big movements on the drivers market. With top drivers like Kimi Raikkonen, Robert Kubica and Jenson Button still in doubt for the next season, Toyota are hoping at least one of them will choose to come to Cologne.
