Toyota Chief Test Driver Dies In LFA Accident near Nurburgring

Toyota’s chief test driver, Hiromu Naruse (67) has died in a head-on collision that took place yesterday on highway 410, close to the Nurburgring, as rhein-zeitung.de reports.

The test driver was behind the wheel of the Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition when the car crashed into a BMW 3 Series, which was also a test vehicle. The BMW drivers were seriously injured but have survived the accident. The German Police is now investigating the accident to determine the guilt. Toyota is expected to release an official statement on the matter soon.

The LFA Nurburgring edition that was involved (& destroyed) in the accident was a test vehicle, which reportedly had a value of $1.85 million and the road where the tragedy took place was a familiar route for the test driver. Naruse was one of the lead developers of the LFA program, also having a rich Toyota performance vehicle testing history of over 40 years. You can watch a post-accident video after the jump.

The Lexus LFA Nurburgring edition is one of the most exclusive supercars on the planet, as only 50 units will be built, accounting for 10 percent of the LFA’s total number of units.

The vehicle, which is expected to hit the market next year, will be a pumped-up version of the LFA’s 4.8 liter V10 powerplant, which will come with a 10 hp premium, offering a total of 562 hp.

The car will also come with a shortened gear-shift time of 0.15 seconds, a modified suspension, a new set of rims and special ultra-grip tires. It will also feature tweaked aerodynamics. The vehicle will have a price tag of $445,000.
