Toyota Canada Recalls Tundra and Highlander Due to Floor Mats

After the recent Sienna minivan recall announcement, Toyota issued another recall, this time exclusive for the Canadian market due to the floor mats sold in the country. These are optional accessories for the 2007-2010 model year Toyota Tundra, as well as the 2008-2010 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles.

According to Canadian AutoNorth website, this new recall covers 4,774 vehicles fitted with Toyota’s "tray-type" floor mats. Toyota Canada explained that the accelerator pedal could get stuck in the wide open position when the mat is unsecured or not properly installed in the driver's position, causing unintended acceleration. The floor mats were only sold for the 2007-2010 Tundra full-size pickup, 2008-2010 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid mid-size SUVs.

Toyota Canada is asking customers to remove the driver's side floor mat, or contact their Toyota dealer for assistance. All affected customers will be notified by mail and provided instructions on how to obtain a reimbursement.

This has been a truly busy week for Toyota. First, there was the Lexus GX 460 issue, after Consumer Reports magazine warned that the luxury-SUV has handling-problems that could lead to a rollover. Toyota immediately halted sales of the GX 460 worldwide and launched an investigation to find out if and why the car has handling issues. It didn’t announce a recall yet, saying it is working to find a solution to the problem.

After the Lexus problem, Toyota announced another massive wave of recalls, this time for the Sienna minivan sold in the U.S. and Canada between 1996 and 2010. It involves 870,000 vehicles sold in 20 cold-weather U.S. states and Canada. The problem is that corrosion could affect the cables that hold the spare wheel in place, leading to a possible detachment.
