Toyota Camry and Lexus IS Might Switch to Turbo Engines Shortly

Well, that should be a first for the Japanese brand, considering so far Toyota have been hesitant towards the downsizing and turbo solutions.

Don't expect Toyota to jump the turbo bandwagon just yet, but a recent report published by Autonews suggests the brand will adopt a "measured" approach regarding turbo engines in the future.

In other words, Toyota won't swap their traditional four-cylinder for turbos right away, but will turn their attention towards larger direct-injected mills that use the more efficient Atkinson cycle combustion.

Also, the use of CVT gearboxes will intensify, but eventually a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder plant will replace the existing V6 found under the hood of several Toyota and Lexus models, involving the Camry and Lexus IS.

Speaking to the same source, Andrew Coetzee, Toyota's group vice president for product planning, said "the powertrain is still an area where we see ourselves as being able to squeeze out a significant amount of efficiency."

Recently, Toyota Camry was named by Cars.com the most American-made vehicle currently sold in the United States, thanks to the fact that the Camry is made since 1988 in Kentucky and the US is where the model was designed and engineered.

Since we brought up sales, you might want to know that the 2015 Toyota Camry LE four-cylinder is priced at $22,970, while top-of-the-range versions like the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SLE, for example, can remove as much as $29,980 from the customer's bank account.
