Toyota Brands Earn Eight IIHS Top Safety Picks

IIHS yesterday released a batch of 66 crashtest results after testing vehicle manufactured under various brands in the United States. Volkswagen and Hyundai/Kia had the most cars with Top Safety Picks awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), each with nine recognitions, while Toyota comes second with a total of eight awards.

Of course, the Japanese manufacturer stepped in and emphasized that safety is one of the company's main concerns when it comes to building cars, so seeing its models receiving a Top Safety Pick was just a matter of time.

The carmaker received the eight awards through its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, each of the following model earning the maximum rating: Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Highlander, Sienna and Venza; Lexus RX, and Scion tC and xB. As said, only Hyundai and its Korean brand Kia and Volkswagen had more vehicles on the Top Safety Pick list. Subaru on the other hand, remains the only carmaker that received a Top Safety Pick for all of its models.

“We are pleased to have received eight IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011, which we believe is reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers,"
Toyota said in a statement for the press.

In order to be eligible for the IIHS Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must score a Good rating in front, side, rear and rollover crashtests conducted by the institute. In addition, each of the tested cars must be equipped with electronic stability control as standard.
