We don’t routinely follow what happens in the South African car market, but drag races are a cool way to get our attention. This story isn’t about a 560 horsepower twin-turbo RS6, but about a Toyota Aygo - three cylinders of non-turbocharged averageness.
Toyota continues to make this, the smallest of its European offerings, together with Citroen and Peugeot. However, the Aygo now looks nothing like the C1 and 108. In fact, it looks as Japanese as an issue of Naruto or some giant fighting robots.

Where money is tight, expectations tend to be lower. So rather than show how amazing the Lexus RC F is, Toyota is proving to the South Africans that the little Aygo is great.

The best word we could find to describe what is going on here is “ worship.” There’s no other way to explain free cookies, brothers singing about you, and admirative gazes from the opposite sex.

With this short commercial, Toyota proves the Aygo is the bee's knees. After testing the car ourselves, we have to admit that it’s got some charm to it. The design is undeniably appealing, and the flaws of the interior can be forgiven. Even the slightly underpowered engines can be forgiven in the urban environment. Order the folding fabric roof and you will be quite happy with the sun on your face as well.

But we can’t help notice how Toyota’s commercial is the exact opposite of those released by Volkswagen in South Africa. The German videos admitted that the Up! won’t get you great looking women, jobs or respect. That’s kind of like reality, and we certainly don’t want to buy that from a car company, now do we?

These two cars are made less than a thousand kilometers from each other and they have many other things in common. For example, both are available only with 3-cylinder engines and measure about 3.5 meters from one bumper to the other. Both 3- and 5-door versions are also available.
