Toyota Aygo and Yaris Embrace Toyota's Safety Sense Tech as Optional Equipment

Earlier this year we were telling you about Toyota's Safety Sense Package, introduced by the RAV4 Hybrid, with the rest of the lineup waiting in line to receive them.

As we expected, Toyota kept their word and made Safety Sense available on the new Avensis and Auris. But now it's time for the little league to receive the same treatment, as Toyota doesn't think size should dictate safety.

As a result, the Aygo city car and Yaris supermini are now available with Toyota Safety Sense, providing a suite of features that can help prevent an accident happening, or reduce the severity of an impact.

In other words, customers can now specify the package as an option on their new car. But let's see what each model will receive.

On Aygo, Toyota Safety Sense provides a laser-controlled Pre-Collision System that warns the driver of an imminent collision with a vehicle ahead (Forward Collision Warning) and readies Pre-Crash Brake Assist to deliver emergency braking as soon as the brake pedal is pressed.

If the driver is not responding, the system will initiate Autonomous Emergency Braking to reduce speed by about 19 mph (km/h), and bringing the car to a stop if the situation demands it.

You should also know Forward Collision Warning works at speeds between 10 and 86 mph (16 and 138 km/h), when the relative speed between the Toyota and the car ahead is greater than 10 mph (16 km/h). Then there's the Lane Departure Feature, which monitors lane markings on the road and alerts the driver when the car starts to deviate from a lane without the turn indicators being used.

The same features detailed above are also available on the Yaris, along with Automatic High Beam.

Since this is an optional pack we're talking about here, Aygo clients will have to pay £375 ($586 at current exchange rates for it, and Yaris buyers £400 ($625 at current exchange rates).
