Toyota Awards $100,000 to 826michigan

The Toyota USA Foundation announced its support for education by announcing a $100,000 grant for the 826michigan organization, a group which dedicates its efforts to help students improve their learning skills.

The money will be used by 826michigan to support its after school tutoring program in Ann Arbor and at Ypsilanti Middle School, as well as hire poet and educator Catherine Calabro. The woman will take charge of overseeing creative writing workshops.

Just to give you an idea why hiring Calabro, who has a MFA in poetry and teaches at the University of Michigan, is so important for the organization it's enough to say 826michigan actually doubled its employment scheme by doing so, as just two people are currently on the staff.

They are supported however by about 1,200 volunteers in their efforts to improve the student's creative, expository writing, math and science skills. 826michigan teaches children aged six to eighteen to improve their skills by having them attend workshops and other activities.

“We remain so thrilled that we can begin to meet more of our community’s need for writing and tutoring support in math, science and other areas of study,”
said Amanda Uhle, 826michigan executive director.

“This is a critical time for us, and this gift is allowing us to unite some of our area’s neediest young people with the tremendous resource of adult volunteers who are able, with our guidance, to provide them with one-on-one attention for homework and other projects.

"We know that, through our volunteers, we are equipping the next generation of writers, engineers, and other professionals.”
