As Australia’s auto industry lays on thin ice and there is not a single vehicle on the local market now that can be sold enough to meet the minimum output required for a viable local factory, the only thing left for the automakers there is to concentrate on the exports.
And Toyota appears to ace that in comparison to other local automakers, reaching its one millionth vehicle exported to the Middle East this month and a peak of 97,000 units delivered in 2008.
Toyota Altona exports 70 percent of its production, which translates in about 70,000 vehicles per year, compared to Holden’s 14,500 units representing 17 percent out of 84,000 produced last year.
Moreover, Toyota managed to export 1,030,000 cars from 1986 until now, while Holden sent 907,000 cars over the border from 1954 and Ford only 500,000 since 1962.
