The Toyota Auris is a truly global car, even though most American fans of the brand don't realize this. The hatchback originally presented as a Scion and switched under the Corolla name is actually called "Auris" in Europe. There, it's available with all types of engines including a hybrid drive.
Due to the overlap with the Prius, Toyota has not sold the Auris Hybrid in Japan. But the 4th generation model looks nothing like a hatchback, allowing the carmaker to widen the range. It's a smart move, considering that the Prius and Prius C are by far the most popular cars in the country.
Equipped with a THS II engine, the Auris Hybrid is now available at 2,620,473 yen. For about 8% more, customers can also order the Hybrid "G Package" that appears to be a copy of the top trim level available in Europe. It comes with the pearl white paint that's widely associated with Toyota hybrids and a white leather interior with black accents.
The engine is a 1.8-liter, just like in the Prius. Together with the electric motor, it achieves a JC08 combined fuel consumption of 30.4 km/l, so it's subject to the eco-car tax reduction.
Also being introduced by Toyota in Japan is the 120T RS Package. We think this is a copy of the body kit made for the Scion iM hatchback that used to be sold in America. It comes with a different front bumper, several mesh grilles, a chin spoiler, side skirts and a diffuser. The 17-inch wheels are standard, and the Red Mica paint is unique to the model. Inside, we find that it's a little duller than the Auris Hybrid.
In case you didn't know this already, the Auris 120T is equipped with a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine that is only available with a CVT in Japan. It's the fist downsized unit of this type ever offered by Toyota, not to mention one of the few turbo engines available.
