Compact SUVs with small-output diesel engines are big right now in Europe. Honda has just launched a CR-V 1.6 with only 120 PS, for example, while Nissan's Qashqai has a 130 PS 1.6 dCi.
But Toyota's answer has never been to downsize. Their new RAV4 is offered in Europe with a 2.0-liter D-4D turbodiesel with 124PS (122hp) at 6,000 rpm, and 310 Nm (228 lb-ft) of torque. Up until this point, you could only buy this with AWD. Only the bigger 2.2-liter D-4D was available with four motor wheels, but that is more expensive to tax.
A new version has just been announced, one which combines the 2.0-liter D-4D turbodiesel engine with Toyota’s Integrated Dynamic Drive System AWD technology.
The system normally provides a 50:50 split between the front and rear. But under normal driving conditions, all the power is sent to the front, which is more efficient.
