If this subject seems new, we will remind you that Toyota has teamed up with BMW about seven months ago in order to jointly develop a new sportscar, probably the new Supra.
Little is known about the future sportscar besides the fact that the two automakers will combine their technology and expertise in creating it and that it will probably be the next Toyota Supra. Remember that the company’s new chairman, Takeshi Uchiyamada, said he fancies a mid-sized vehicle, similar to the legendary 2JZ-powered one.

However, speaking with Drive recently at the launch of the 4 Series, members of BMW’s product team said that they were working on “four, five or six” different vehicles for the joint project.

“There is no decision on which direction we will go,” a BMW spokesman said. “It could be a mid-engined supercar or a traditional front-engined sports car.  We don’t know yet.”

In the meantime, the two automakers are also working on lithium-ion batteries and other fuel-saving technologies, as well as a new efficient BMW diesel engine for the European market. And given the fact that the companies are concerned about going green, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if the upcoming Supra will be a hybrid.
