The new Toyota 4Runner sure looks mean and brags about coming with a handful of rough-terrain tech aids to take you places. But is it so? Kelley Blue Book took one and pitted it against one of the hardest trails they could find, snow included.
Did it manage? We’re only going too tell you this is not your average city SUV and can handle more than curbs, speed humps or steeper driveways. It is a proper offroader which is going to take you and your family/friends up to the lodge and back if you know how to use it. Even if you have to climb on boulders, go through mud or deep snow.

And it does that at a rather reasonble price compared to other models in this class. The basic SR5 one starts at $33,010, while the beefed-up Limited model is available at $41,385, but we would recommend getting the mid-offer Trail model at $35,915 because it’s the best of the two worlds.

One of the key features defining the 4Runner’s characteristics is the fact it still retains the body-on-frame construction. You might laugh at this, but it really helps when the tarmac ends. This also enables for a higher ground clearance as well as bigger approach and departure angles, in this case measuring 33 and 26 degrees.

But just being one of the last remaining true SUVs doesn’t mean technology missed the 4Runner. It comes with everything you need and a neat Multi-Terrain Select feature that changes power distribution to each wheel depending on the surface you’re driving on. You can learn more about that here.
