This stunning Toyota 2000GT was sold recently for over $1 million at auction. Built only in 351 units, the two-door fastback is considered to be the first true Asian-developed sportscar.
RM Auctions has recently sold an impeccable Toyota 2000GT fastback coupe for nearly $1.15 million (€880,000), making it the most expensive production car made by the automaker, as well as the highest-priced Asian car ever sold.

Built between 1967 and 1970, the 2000GT revolutionized the automotive world’s view over Japanese cars, showing that they can make proper sportscars to compete against European ones. Until then, the Japanese automakers were considered to produce imitative cheap and stodgily practical cars.

The car was extremely low for that time (116 cm / 45.7 in) and it was contoured by sleek lines, having an elongated front end and a fastback design for the tail. The smooth flowing lines were enhanced by pop-up headlights as well as large plexiglass covered driving lights to further enhance aerodynamics.

Powered by a Toyota Crown-based 2-liter straight-six engine developing 150 hp (112 kW), the sportscar was said to reach 217 km/h (135 mph). Nine special MD-12 models were built, fitted with a larger 2.3-liter engine and two custom open-top models were made for the James Bond movie “You Only Live Twice”.
