The YouTube artist known as TheSketchMonkey has done his usual modernization of a classic car, explaining where the 2000GT comes from and what are the styling elements that date it. Just like with any other 60s or 70s car, you immediately see the small wheels and abundant chrome trim. Changing these elements makes the study remble a Jaguar F-Type.
Meanwhile, the redesign of the front end somehow turns the 2000GT into a cartoon character with a slightly upset expression. And by bringing out some of the more subtle character lines, this Japanese car starts to resemble an early Corvette or a Shelby Cobra. I suppose every small, classic car looks like something else in that era.
There's nothing "Toyota" about this, but that's to be expected, considering the company changes its design language every few years. As Mr. Sketch points out, the GT wasn't even supposed to be a Toyota in the first place. Yamaha came up with the idea and approached Nissan first.
As its name suggests, power comes from a 2000cc engine, an inline-6 that puts out 148 hp or about as much as your average Corolla today. The unit came out of a Crown sedan but was overhauled by Yamaha into a sports car engine by installing three 2-barrel Mikuni-Solex 40 PHH carburetors to a new DOHC head.
