Touareg Turns Hybrid, Passat Finds BlueMotion

Growing concern about environmental issues, as well as better than predicted market response to Hybrid vehicles, made all car producers occupy themselves with the creation of either hybrid or more fuel efficient engines. Volkswagen, for instance, has just announced the introduction of its BlueMotion technology for three Passat versions.

The Passat BlueMotion has a 4.9 liter fuel consumption and 128 g/km CO2 emissions. Priced at 26,750 euros, the model has a Start-Stop system and conforms to the Euro-5 emissions standard. It has a range of over 1,400 kilometers on one tank of fuel. The Passat BlueMotion will also be available as a wagon, at a price of 27,900 euros.

The Passat BlueTDI is a 105-kW diesel and also the first TDI to conform to the Euro-6 emissions standard, set to be implemented in 2014. The Passat BlueTDI costs 29,225 euros and is fitted with a SCR catalytic converter that reduces nitrogen oxides to less than 80 mg/km. Fuel consumption of the model is 5.2 liter/100-km with 137 g/km CO2 emissions. The “BlueTDI” will also be available as a wagon, for 30,375 euros.

The Passat TSI EcoFuel is the only VW model powered by natural gas. Thanks to its 110 kW engine, the Passat TSI EcoFuel reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. The car accelerates from naught to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, thanks to the world’s first turbocharged direct-injection engine configured for natural gas operation.

If the natural gas on board should run low before the next fill-up station, the engine controller switches over to gasoline mode. The Passat TSI EcoFuel will be offered at a starting price of 29,975 euros for the sedan and 31,125 euros for the Wagon.

In line with the ecofriendly new Passat versions, Volkswagen will introduce a prototype of the future Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid (333 PS / under 9.0 l/100 km). This model will enter production in 2010 as the world’s first hybrid SUV to have 3.5 metric ton towing capacity. The German carmaker is using an alliance of a V6 TSI (245 kW) boosted by supercharger and an electric motor (38 kW). Up to a speed of 50 km/h, the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid can be driven by just the electric motor.
