Totaled Tesla Model 3 Shows the Perils of T-Boning an Uninsured Ford F-350

Tesla’s high-tech approach to car ownership has brought all sorts of side benefits to the world, including tons of interesting footage caught through the TeslaCam (its built-in dashcam) and Sentry Mode. They’ve been a great resource of information for entertainment as well as valuable aids during investigations and accidents.

There's little wonder there are dedicated YouTube channels for video compilations of footage sent by Tesla users. One of them is called Wham Baam Teslacam, and its latest weekly episode of “Teslacam Stories” shows an interesting accident.

It’s not necessarily from the setup's point of view, because we’re being shown a rather casual encounter. A recently acquired Tesla Model 3 is being driven casually – and at pretty low speed, most likely below the limit – in Dallas, Texas. The owner is positioned in the middle lane and is driving towards an intersection where a couple of cars give right-of-way before executing a left turn.

Unfortunately for the electric vehicle, a woman driving an older Ford F-350 is also executing the same maneuver from the opposite direction exactly when the Model 3 crosses the intersection. The Tesla dashcam captures the exact moment of the encounter, a classic T-bone. It’s unknown if the EV's owner had time to react and apply the brakes, but the impact clearly damages both cars, with the F-350 clearly losing a refrigerator that was in the bed in the process.

On the other hand, the Tesla owner lost much more as the brand-new Model 3 that was delivered just a few weeks prior to the incident hasn’t survived the ordeal. Furthermore, the woman driving the Blue Oval pickup truck was probably depending on the company’s “Built Ford Tough” tagline in more ways than imagined, as she was driving both unlicensed and uninsured!

That could have resulted in major financial damage for the Tesla owner, but luckily, he was prudent enough to have uninsured motorist coverage. Two lessons can be learned here: to always cover your brand-new car against such cases and know that automakers create punchlines for marketing purposes – not even a Super Duty is invulnerable.

By the way, from the 0:40 mark onwards, the episode takes us through many other incidents, including European encounters between EVs and reckless young drivers. There's also a couple of those musing about stolen Tesla Model 3s that bring back memories of The Blues Brothers police car scene, among others things such as Autopilot fails and, of course, road rage examples.
