Toro Rosso Confirm STR5 Launch on February 1

After recent reports suggested that Scuderia Toro Rosso will indeed make the first testing session at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo Circuit next week with their brand new STR5, the team finally confirmed it during the course of this week. With all eyes focused on Mercedes GP's car launch yesterday, a media statement from STR appeared on the team's site during the same day.

It stated that the brand new STR5 car will make its first public appearance in the very morning of the February 1 test day, at 9 A.M. Team boss Franz Tost and technical boss Giorgio Ascanelli will be present at the event, as well as the team's two confirmed race drivers Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.

This will be the first challenger fully developed by Scuderia Toro Rosso in Formula One in years. Following the new customer rules imposed by the FIA for the 2010 season, the team was no longer allowed to benefit from chassis work from Red Bull's Development center. But even so, the team managed to make the February 1 deadline, unlike sister team Red Bull Racing (who will miss the Valencia test in order to properly develop their RB6 car).

The STR5 will be first driven by Sebastien Buemi, who will benefit from 2 days of testing next week. His newly-confirmed teammate Jaime Alguersuari will only get to test the new car for one day in Valencia, next Wednesday.

At the moment, the plan is for Sebastien Buemi to give the TR5 its maiden voyage around the track, continuing to drive on the Tuesday, before handing over the steering wheel to the recently reconfirmed Jaime Alguersuari, for Wednesday's session,” said the press release from the team.
