TomTom Releases New Map Pack

The TomTom Netherlands-based GPS and auto satnav producer has released its latest map update package.

The pack includes over 100 new or updated maps, covers three new countries and over 100,000 kilometers of new roads. TomTom users can now purchase maps for Morocco & Western Sahara, Chile and French Antilles for the first time. The map set detailing the latter includes Guadaloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin.

The recently-developed maps are based on validated edits and anonymous GPS measurements that have been made by the TomTom drivers from all around the world. TomTom is the only developer in the automotive navigation industry to employ this user community map development system.

The fresh map pack can be purchased online from the TomTom map shop. The company’s latest generation of navigation systems offers quarterly map updates and a latest map guarantee feature. This means that if a map is updated within 30 days of the first use of a new TomTom device, customers can download the new version free of charge. The developer also offers a map update service, which offers drivers all the releases of a certain map that have been created over a two-year period.

Some additions form the latest map package might seem unnecessary to some... for example, you might wonder why you’d need a map of Morocco. Here’s one reason: if you’re a motorsport enthusiast, especially an off-road fan, you should go there to watch the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles live. The competition takes place until March 28, is dedicated exclusively to women and, as an irony (should you go there and show off your new satnav system), it does not allow participants to use any modern, high-tech navigation tools.
