"The launch planned for the iPhone this summer is on track," the CEO was quoted as saying by techradar.com. As for availability, TomTom's application will be available through the company's usual channels and, as Goddjin says, "hopefully that will include Apple stores."
TomTom's application will be made available after the one released yesterday by Navigon. The German provider has thus become the first big company to bring navigation software for US based iPhones.
TomTom has big plans for its business in the upcoming years. As we told you in the beginning of the month, the provider is also working on a 3D satellite navigation technology to be introduced no later than 2010.
The technology is intended to work in a similar manner to the Google Earth program. In order to be able to display 3D data, vehicles would have to be equipped with high-tech LCD screens which are already available on a number of models on the market.
Additionally, the company extended its business in Argentina. “Argentina offers a good potential with over 9 million cars on the road every day, and we are confident that we can achieve the same leading position in Argentina that we already have in the rest of the world,” Elias Kabeche, TomTom Latin America area director said.
Through these moves TomTom intends to get back on track, after posting a 61 percent drop in second quarter earnings ($28.5 million) from the same period in 2008 ($74 million).
