Tommy Hilfiger's Jeep Grand Wagoneer for Sale

As part of a fund-raising event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the fashion industry magazine Women’s Wear Daily and the 25th anniversary of Tommy Hilfiger, the renowned designer donated a custom 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer to be auctioned for charity.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a reinterpretation of one of the vehicles featured in the Fall 2010 advertising campaign that introduced "The Hilfigers" with some extra, special touches.

The outside of the car is decorated with wood grain side panels accentuated with a “Tommy Hilfiger 25th Anniversary” pinstripe. Interior changes include seat coverings in Mr. Hilfiger's signature argyle plaid, of navy blue inflected with red. The steering wheel continues the color combination, being wrapped in blue cowhide with red stitching. Red Sisal carpets cover the floors.

Tommy Hilfiger for WWD 100th” is mounted in vinyl on the hood, and a gold letter “H” graces the driver’s door and passenger doors. A Tommy Hilfiger logo is marked on the tailgate.

The Grand Wagoneer is a pioneer of the SUV and a concrete representation of lifestyle aspirations of the sort Mr. Hilfiger’s clothing and other designs also feed. Introduced as the Jeep Wagoneer in 1963 and later named the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, it continued to be produced on the same platform, with minor mechanical changes for 28 years.

The Wagoneer still appeals to designers for its plain lines and solid body. Ralph Gilles, Chrysler’s head of design, said that the rear of the new 2011 Grand Cherokee was influenced by the early Wagoneers.

The sale of Mr. Hilfiger’s vehicle will benefit Millenium Promise, a nonprofit organization that aims “to end extreme poverty in our lifetime.” Bidding runs through Nov. 18.
