Tomczyk Leads Audi's Top 4 at the Nurburgring

Audi left the Nurburgring on Sunday in a triumphant style, as the Ingolstadt based team clinched the top four spots of the DTM race yesterday afternoon. Martin Tomczyk, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekstrom led the race from beginning to end and left no room for podium hopes on Sunday, with the first taking the chequered flag for the first time this season.

Starting from pole position, Tomczyk quickly drove away from the pack, as his Abt Sportsline teammates had to work a little to get past Mercedes' works driver Bruno Spengler in the first lap. However, they managed to quickly get into podium-finishing position after only a few kilometers, with Spengler further dropping down the pack after being overtaken by Markus Winkelhock.

The order of the Top 4 would remain unchanged for the entire duration of the race, as neither of the pit stops brought nothing new to the table. The last stop by the pits did change the order in the middle of the pack, as Spengler dropped one more position to Jamie Green, driving a one-year old C-Klasse.

Seventh overall belonged to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, who drove a safe race from beginning to end to finish just ahead of championship leader – until the Ring – Gary Paffett. The Brit had to settle for the last point following an afternoon to forget. He had collided with Katherine Legge in the very opening lap and had to run a recovery race all afternoon.

His 8th place on Sunday also cost him the top spot in the overall classification, as he has now fallen behind Scheider and Ekstrom in the title race.

The car was just fantastic; I didn’t have one single problem this weekend. Moreover, it was a comfortable race for me with two Audis behind me. However, winning a race is always the most beautiful thing. I had been lacking the speed I had this weekend for a long time, but now, I am back,” said Tomczyk after the race.
