Tom Cruise’s Training for Space Movie Will Include Bathroom Use, Eating Solids

Tom Cruise is pushing 60, but you wouldn’t be able to tell based on his most recent movies – let alone from the one he has lined up. Thanks to a partnership with NASA and SpaceX, the actor will be shooting a movie in space.

This sounds like a joke but is not. Reports earlier this week mentioned the possibility of Cruise flying to space to shoot his next movie, a yet-to-be-named project. They were immediately confirmed by NASA, which said, in more or less words, that letting an actor as famous as Cruise fly to space with them was the best way to get young people interested in the space project.

Since then, confirmation has come that shooting will take place on the ISS space station, but we still don’t know whether Cruise will be up there to shoot the entire movie or just scenes from it. Either way, he’s in for training unlike anything else he’s done before. Considering his career so far, that sounds almost impossible.

Retired astronauts Scott Kelly, who commanded three expeditions on the ISS, and Roy Bridges Jr., who piloted the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1985, tell TMZ that, among other things, Cruise will have to re-learn to do the basics because of zero-gravity. This includes going to the bathroom, and cooking and getting food to his mouth.

Blood rushing to the head and vomiting are common experiences for newbies, so Cruise will have to be prepared for that as well. And this is just on top of “standard” astronaut training, which includes getting in and out of the spacesuit, getting in and out of the capsule, and training for emergency situations and landing into the ocean upon return.

That said, Cruise is bound to have a blast (pun intended), the two astronauts believe. Kelly says there’s no comparing the experiencing of flying into space, unless you consider being shot over the Niagara Falls “in a barrel while you’re on fire.”
