Since the May 2020 announcement that Tom Cruise and director / writer Doug Liman’s next project would be a movie shot in space, not many other details have been made public regarding the project. Liman himself is still keeping mum, but here’s a little update.
According to one report, this October, Cruise, Liman and a third actor or actress / space tourist, will board the Axion Mission to head for the International Space Station, where they will be shooting scenes for the yet-unnamed project. There is no confirmation of this report, but just in case you were wondering whether Cruise is really about to become the first actor to shoot a film in space, Liman says that yes, he is.

Speaking with Collider to promote his latest film, Locked Down (video below), Liman details some of the obstacles he and Cruise (as a producing partner) had to overcome in order to get the project off the ground. Anyone with minimal knowledge of how the movie industry works knows that no film ever happens without first securing backing (i.e. money) and insurance.

This particular project, because it will be shot in space, had to find a company to offer space insurance, Liman says. It was a most difficult task since it’s a first in the industry, but it was eventually carried out with success. “We wouldn’t be talking about this movie if we hadn’t figured out a way to navigate the insurance component. So we have navigated it,” Liman says. “You know, insurance is gonna dictate whether that actually is possible.”

Liman further says that the movie still doesn’t have an official title, but doubt not that it’s an actual thing. That is to say, it’s not just something that he and Cruise hope to get done, but a real project that is in development.

While the director can’t offer a detailed timeline, he confirms it will start shooting in one or two years, tops. “It’s not just some abstract idea. It’s a movie,” he insists.
