For his next stunt, Tom Cruise is shooting a movie in space. That sounds like the opening of one of those cheap magic shows for kids, but it’s actually the – quite awesome – reality. And it will be happening sooner than we thought.
Earlier this month, Deadline broke the news that Tom Cruise was in talks for a movie that would shoot in space, at least partially. NASA and SpaceX would take him there and make it happen on the ISS space station, both agencies confirmed some hours later.
A new Deadline report is now saying that the project could kick-start sooner than we imagined: the film already has a director and a first draft for a script. Doug Liman, who previously worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow and American Made, has been involved from the start: he and Cruise did the first draft of the script and they will both serve as co-producers, with Liman at the helm.
For the time being, the project is not attached to a studio, but Cruise is one of the top draws for both Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. It’s highly unlikely that neither will want to jump at the chance at releasing what will be the most groundbreaking action movie of our time and a first in cinema.
Deadline says that both Liman and Cruise are eager to “re-team” and get to work. “Clearly the space film will have an unprecedented pre-production that will involve training to be able to withstand an outer space flight, but I’m told in no uncertain terms these guys are serious and hopeful this can happen in the very near future,” the report notes.
For the time being, both Liman and Cruise have separate projects to complete, as soon as the situation allows it. But they, like most of the world, can use lockdown idle times to plan ahead – in their case, to play with the idea of the space movie and maybe get the ball rolling with the right people.
