The ‘Blower’ Bentleys of the 1930 are some of the most famous and iconic British sports cars in history. They set the name ‘Bentley’ apart from everybody else in the business and made some fantastic cars which, even nowadays, are still appreciated as landmarks among early sports cars.
One of those cars, driven by Tim Brikin, one of the original “Bentley Boys” from the brand’s early days, has just sold at auction for €5,6- (£4.5-) million. The blown Speed Six affectionately known as ‘Old No. 2’ is powred by a four and a half liter liter straight-four engine, force-fed by a supercharger, pumping out in excess of 240 hp. This gave the car a top speed of 220 km/h (138 mph), which was first achieved in March of 1932, at the famous Brooklands banked speedway.
Bentley’s Director of VIP and Royal Relations commented on the event, saying that "Birkin along with his Bentley racing friends like Woolf Barnato, Dudley Benjafield and Glen Kidston were true sporting superstars, renowned not only for their driving ability and courage but living life to the full and in some considerable style. They would create the enduring legend of the Bentley Boy racer at Brooklands and Le Mans and this new record price for a Bentley achieved by Bonhams reflects the enduring respect and admiration for their story and their cars."
